Truckers are often guilty of reckless driving

When driving on the highways of Montana, you won’t have to look far to spot a commercial truck. Sharing the road with these vehicles safely is imperative.

While most truckers do whatever it takes to avoid trouble on the road, some continue to violate the law. For example, when a trucker drives in a reckless manner, it greatly increases the risk of an accident with another vehicle.

There are many forms of reckless driving, including but not limited to:

  • Excessive speeding: Truckers do this for many reasons, such as if they are on a tight deadline or will receive a bonus for arriving at their destination early.
  • Racing another vehicle: You’ve likely experienced a situation in which a trucker doesn’t want you to pass them. If this happens, let the trucker race up the road while you move your vehicle out of harm’s way.
  • Illegal passing: This comes in many forms. For instance, a trucker may attempt to pass a vehicle on a two-lane highway with a solid lane line. Some truckers are also in the habit of passing in the right lane, instead of the left.

If you’re injured in an accident with a truck, move to safety and call for help. If possible, collect evidence from the scene, such as photos of your damaged vehicle and witness contact information.

After you receive medical treatment, file a claim with your insurance company and make note of the many ways you can receive compensation for your injuries and damages. It’s important that you know exactly what you can do to protect your legal rights.
