Safe driving on ice can be a challenge

by | Nov 23, 2018 | Car Accidents |

This winter, you may find yourself behind the wheel in icy conditions. Even if you have experience driving in winter weather, you’re sure to realize that you’re in a dangerous situation. Safe driving on ice is easier said than done, as you never know exactly what you’re up against.

Before discussing a few of the best tips for driving safely on ice, consider that it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you don’t like the idea of driving in certain conditions, move to safety and wait for them to improve.

Here are some tips to keep you safer when driving on ice:

  • Slow down. The faster you drive, the more likely it is that you’ll lose control. Even though you want to slow down, try to maintain a steady speed. Stopping completely can make it difficult to gain traction and start up again.
  • Keep your windshield and windows clear. You must be able to see everything around you, as other drivers are also contending with the inclement weather conditions. If you’re unable to see for any reason, pull over and clear your windshield before hitting the road again.
  • Beware of traveling downhill. When traveling downhill in icy conditions, you may find it difficult to maintain control of your vehicle. This holds true even if you’re moving slowly.
  • Steer in the direction you want to go. If your car skids, don’t slam on the brakes or hit the gas. Instead, steer in the direction you want to travel as you slowly regain control of the vehicle.

If another person neglects to drive safely in poor conditions, they could cause a car accident. If this happens, pull to safety and call for help. Only after you receive treatment should you contact your insurance company and learn how to best protect your legal rights.
