Are you staying as safe as possible on your motorcycle?

The minute someone tries to tell you that riding a motorcycle is safe as long as you know what you’re doing is the minute you should stop listening. There’s no way that any motorcyclist, no matter how skilled and well-trained he or she is, can completely eliminate the dangers involved with sharing the road with potentially distracted, intoxicated or negligent vehicle drivers.

That said, there is a lot that the average biker can do to reduce his or her chances of getting into a crash. Here are two excellent safety practices that every motorcyclist should be doing:

Don’t worry about “right of way,” worry about avoiding the crash: Having the right of way as a motorcyclist doesn’t mean anything when a vehicle is about to sideswipe you and send you flying across the pavement. Always keep a close eye on any car that could potentially violate your right of way. Make sure that the motorist has made direct eye contact with you before you move in front of him or her.

Take corners slow: It’s fun to carve deep into a corner or curve as fast as possible on a motorcycle. There’s no doubt about that. But is it worth your life? Slow down while going into a turn and only start to accelerate on the way out of the turn when you can see that the way is clear. By slowing down you’ll have a better chance of avoiding dangerous obstacles that could cause you to lay your bike down.

If you get into a crash and have serious injuries despite your best efforts, make sure to fully understand the facts surrounding the incident and your legal rights and options. If the circumstances are right, the law could be on your side in terms of pursuing financial compensation.
