Perhaps the most unsettling thing about motor vehicle accidents is the way they happen when we least expect them to, and the way they alter the course of our lives forever. Be it a catastrophic injury or a death in the family, if it’s a serious enough crash, no one will forget that fateful day.

Tragically, one such accident ripped through the lives of family members of a Montana man’s family in January. According to news reports, the 59-year-old man was traveling in a pickup truck through neighboring North Dakota at approximately 6:30 p.m., on a Wednesday evening, when another pickup stuck his vehicle head-on.

The road conditions were icy that day. It may be that the 19-year-old behind the wheel of the other pickup lost control of his vehicle as a result of those conditions, crossed into oncoming traffic and everything happened in an instant — before evasive maneuvers could be successfully made.

As of last reports, police had yet to complete their investigations. As such, we do not know if alcohol, speeding or some other factor may have played a role in this unfortunate accident. What we do know is that the family members of the deceased man will never be the same. They will struggle to come to grips with losing their loved one for years to come.

Following a fatal car accident, in which the victim dies due to no fault of his or her own, surviving family members may wish to learn about how the crash happened, and whether sufficient evidence exists to pursue a wrongful death action in civil court. In some cases, such claims can bring a sense of closure to surviving family members.
