Some of Montana’s most beautiful roads are the most dangerous

Montana is home to some of the most beautiful natural sights in the country — and maybe the world. However, many of the stretches of road you need to drive to see these sights up close are also the most dangerous.

What one driver considers dangerous, another may find exhilarating. Whether a road seems risky to drive may depend on what time of year you’re driving on it. Mountain passes can be particularly hazardous during the winter, for example.

So what are the most dangerous areas to drive in Montana? Let’s take a look at some that have garnered that distinction.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: The high elevation, wind and mist at the top of this road make it a tricky drive. But it is also breathtaking.

Highway 93: This is considered one of the deadliest highways in Montana. That’s largely because of the number of wildlife — including bears, deer and elk — that cross it. They’re particularly abundant between mileposts 90 and 110. Many drivers also go too fast on this highway.

Highway 191: The section between Bozeman and West Yellowstone has seen hundreds of serious crashes. It’s been referred to as an “icy gauntlet of death” in the winter.

MacDonald Pass: This crosses the Continental Divide west of Helena. The view from the steep cliffs is beautiful, but those cliffs, along with the sharp corners, mean that drivers need to use caution. That’s particularly true in the winter, when it can get icy.

Sheep Mountain Road: The views from this road in Park County, located at nearly 10,450 feet above sea level, are stunning. However, it’s a gravel road, so it’s bumpy, rocky and generally undrivable in the winter.

Before you travel on these or other unfamiliar roads in Montana or the Mountain States, it’s best to do a little research so that you know what to expect. Check the weather conditions and forecast first, particularly in the winter.

Don’t hurry and allow yourself plenty of room around other drivers who may not be as experienced or conscientious as you are. If you’re injured by another driver, make sure you get the compensation you need for medical bills and other expenses.
