Do you know how to stay safe when driving in fog?

by | May 7, 2019 | Truck Accidents |

Any type of inclement weather makes it difficult to drive, and this is particularly true of fog. Not only does it reduce your visibility of the road but it also makes it more difficult for other drivers to see you.

If you find yourself driving in heavy fog, here are three tips to follow:

  • Use your headlights: This improves your visibility of the road, while making it easier for other drivers to spot your vehicle. Never use your high beams in fog, as the light will reflect back into your eyes.
  • Slow down: Since your visibility is limited, you won’t have as much time as usual to react to hazards, such as traffic that’s stopped on the highway. Slowing down gives you more time to react.
  • Focus on the road: Driving in fog is a challenge, so you need to focus on the road and your surroundings at all times. Set your cellphone to the side, don’t talk to passengers and turn off the radio. One hundred percent of your attention should be on the road.

Even if you follow these safety tips when driving in fog, don’t expect every other driver to do the same. For example, commercial truck drivers don’t always alter their driving approach in bad weather, as they’re in a hurry to reach their destination.

If a negligent trucker causes an accident, move to safety and call 911 for help. Once you receive treatment and understand your prognosis, turn your focus to the cause of the accident and steps for obtaining compensation for your injuries.
