What to do if you spot an impaired driver

by | Jul 13, 2018 | Car Accidents |

When you get behind the wheel in Montana, you likely feel confident that you will reach your destination safely. It’s common to think this way because you do everything possible to be a safe driver. But, do you really know if the drivers around you are as safe as you? That can be a scary thought. That’s why we will explain what you should do if you ever spot an impaired driver.

If you notice the telltale signs of an impaired driver, you need to report it to police immediately. Some of the signs include the following:

  • Swerving
  • Illegal turning
  • Failure to use headlights at night
  • Drinking alcohol while driving
  • Running red lights or stop signs
  • Hitting parked cars
  • Driving in the middle of the road
  • Driving in oncoming traffic

If you spot a driver in Belgrade exhibiting any of these signs, you need to safely pull off the road and dial 911 to report the vehicle. Make sure you can give a strong description, including the make, model, color and license plate. Try to give a description of the driver if you got a good look.

Make sure you never follow the vehicle or attempt to get the driver to pull over. This will only put your life and the lives of other drivers in more danger. If you are close to the suspected vehicle, you should distance yourself from it by slowing down, not accelerating.

Sharing the roads with distracted drivers is dangerous enough. Your trip, no matter how short, can become even more dangerous when sharing the roads in Belgrade with an impaired driver.
